    First digit structure is as follows: 

    Pxxxx for powertrain 
    Bxxxx for body 
    Cxxxx for chassis 
    Uxxxx for future systems 

    Second digit structure is: 

    P0xxx Government required codes 
    P1xxx Manufacturer codes for additional emission system function; not required but reported to the government 


    Third digit structure is: 

    Px1xx measurement of air and fuel 
    Px2xx measurement of air and fuel 
    Px3xx ignition system 
    Px4xx additional emission control 
    Px5xx speed and idle regulation 
    Px6xx computer and output signals 
    Px7xx transmission 
    Px8xx transmission 
    Px9xx control modules, input and output signals 


    The fourth and fifth digits designate the individual components and systems. 


    Here's a generic list of DTC codes for reference, makes the post a bit long but should do. These are for SAE standard ones, as used for SAE J2012 OBD-II: 

    Anatomy of the Diagnostic Trouble Code 

    A DTC is made up of 5 digits. The figure below demonstrates the 
    composition of a DTC. With this information it is easier to trouble shoot a DTC 
    without knowing the description of the code.

    Types of DTC's 
    There are two categories of DTC's that apply to OBD II. They are listed 
    below with Type A being the more severe. 
    Type A 
    1. Emissions related. 
    2. Requests illumination of the MIL after one failed driving cycle. 
    3. Stores a freeze frame DTC after one failed driving cycle. 
    Type B 
    1. Emissions related. 
    2. Sets a Pending Trouble Code after one failed driving cycle. 
    3. Clears a Pending Trouble Code after one successful driving cycle. 
    4. Turns on the MIL after two consecutive failed driving cycles. 
    5. Stores a freeze frame after two consecutive failed driving cycles.

    There are a lot more, including the 'P1xxx' codes that are manufacturer specific, but that'll do for a start... 


    Here's some more - instrument cluster specific, but generic across all sorts of vehicles as a quick Google search will show. I've also got the equivalent SAE codes listed, which are the official generic ones, the ones that are displayed on the dash are an FMC code format as far as I can tell. 

    This lot suggests the 262 DTC code is an SCP error - nothing to worry about, just a comms glitch. And any other DTC code that appears on the dash is going to correspond to the second column of the data below, any other codes aren't displayed on the dash, you'll need a readout device to get them. 

    The table formatting is all messed up, but you should get the idea, the titles should be in 3 columns.

    Il VIN, o Vehicle Identification Number, è un numero che identifica in modo univoco un veicolo.

    Questo numero permette di risalire in modo esatto al modello e alla versione del tuo autoveicolo.

  3. Vediamo intanto quali sono le strutture del VIN e della door tag:

    La codifica e la posizione del VIN sono rimaste inalterate durante la produzione (posizionato sopra il fender apron lato guida e visibile attraverso uno scanso del parafango), il VIN della I gen Mustang contiene diverse informazioni:

    • Model year
    • Assembly plant
    • Body style (coupe/convertibile/fastback)
    • Engine code (identifica tipo di motore)
    • Seriale di produzione

    Un vin esempio è quello della mia coupe 67:

    Decodificando avremo:

    7: 1967

    F : Assemblata a Dearborn (Michigan)

    01: Hardtop

    C: Identifica il motore in: 289ci ovverosia 4,7l, con alimentazione a carburatore doppio corpo (di solito indicato con 2bbl o dual barrel), 200CV.

    185486: numero sequenziale di produzione, coinvolgeva tutti gli impianti di produzione.

     

    ASSEMBLY PLANT

    Se il primo campo (anno di produzione) è di immediata decodifica, il secondo campo (assembly plant) ha dei codici univoci. Gli impianti di assemblaggio FORD per le prime generazioni erano 3:

    • R - San Jose - California
    • F - Dearborn - Michigan
    • T - Metuchen - New Jersey

     

    BODY STYLE

    I codici body style sono cambiati dopo i primi 2 1/2 anni di produzione (64 1/2 - 66).

    Per i modelli 64 1/2 - 66:

     

    • 07 - Hardtop
    • 08 - Convertibile
    • 09 - Fastback (disponibile dal 65)

    Con il restyling del 67 cambia la codifica:

    • 01 - Hardtop
    • 02 - Fastback
    • 03 - Convertibile

    ENGINE CODES

    I codici che identificavano i motori erano diversi e ovviamente sono stati cambiati durante la produzione a causa della comparsa (e scomparsa) di nuove motorizzazioni.

    All'inizio della produzione, nel 1964 1/2 gli unici motori disponibili erano:

    1964 1/2

    • D - 289 V8 con 4bbl
    • F - 260 V8 con 2bbl
    • K - 289 V8 4bbl HiPerformance
    • U - 170 I6 1bbl

    1965

    Nel 65, per far fronte alla pressante domanda del mercato, vengono aggiunte nuove motorizzazioni, gli unici motori disponibili erano quindi:

    • A - 289 V8 con 4bbl - 225CV
    • C - 289 V8 con 2bbl - 200CV
    • K - 289 V8 4bbl HiPerformance - 271CV
    • T - 200 I6 1bbl - 140CV

    1966

    Nel 66 le motorizzazioni restano invariate

     

    1967

    Nel 67, con il primo importante restyling che coinvolge sia la scocca che gli interni, vengono modificate le motorizzazioni disponibili, introducendo il primo big block: il 390 e di seguito il 428, che erano già montati sulle fullsize di casa Ford: Galaxie, Fairlane e Thunderbird. L'utilizzo dei big blocks ha comportato una modifica del vano motore, che viene allargato per far posto ai motori di maggior cubatura. 

    Il 428, denominato PI (Police Interceptor) non verrà mai montato su Mustangs di serie, ma riservato alle Shelby GT500. Sulle GT350, invece, viene montata l'unità proveniente dalle K codes, che, con opportune modifiche, arrivava ad erogare oltre 300CV.

    • A - 289 V8 con 4bbl - 225CV
    • C - 289 V8 con 2bbl - 200CV
    • K - 289 V8 4bbl HiPerformance - 271CV
    • T - 200 I6 1bbl - 140CV
    • S - 390 V8 4bbl

    Appare il 427, mai ufficialmente montato su nessuna Mustang se non sulla splendida SUPERSNAKE, credo che meriti una foto, fatta durante le prove sull'anello ad alta velocità, dove stabilì un record di velocità di 170mph, con una media di oltre 150 mph. L'idea era di produrne 50, ma il costo proibitivo del 427 ha fatto si che questa restasse un esemplare unico.

    1968

    Nel 68 la produzione si sposta sempre di più verso i big blocks, viene introdotto il 302, ottenuto aumentando la corsa del 289 da 2.87" a 3.00".  e, a metà 68 appare il 428 Cobra Jet, che verrà montato sulla GT 500 KR.

    Della X code (390 2bbl) sono stati prodotti circa 700 esemplari e molti libri e siti non riportano nemmeno..probabilmente voleva essere una versione economica della S code.

    • J - 302 V8 4bbl
    • T - 200 I6 1bbl
